For people living, working, studying or building a business in Alberta, provincial nomination can be as important as federal Express Entry. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) operates several worker and entrepreneur streams, and worker selection now begins with a Worker Expression of Interest process.
Alberta worker pathways
Current AAIP worker options include the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Alberta Express Entry Stream, Dedicated Health Care Pathways, Rural Renewal Stream and Tourism and Hospitality Stream. Each pathway uses its own eligibility rules and Alberta labour-market priorities.
Worker Expression of Interest matters
Candidates do not simply submit a worker-stream application whenever they choose. AAIP uses a Worker Expression of Interest pool and issues invitations based on scores, provincial priorities, available nomination spaces and application volumes. Eligibility and competitiveness are therefore separate questions.
Alberta Opportunity Stream
This stream is especially relevant to eligible temporary foreign workers already living and working full-time in Alberta with an eligible Alberta job offer. Work permit type, occupation, language, education, work experience and employer requirements all matter.
Alberta Express Entry and targeted pathways
The Alberta Express Entry Stream can select candidates from the federal Express Entry pool. Alberta also operates targeted initiatives, including the Accelerated Tech Pathway, health-care pathways and priority-sector selection. A candidate’s occupation and Alberta employment can be central to strategy.
Why Alberta cases require timing discipline
AAIP criteria, draws, allocations and processing priorities can change during the year. Applicants should preserve valid work authorization, maintain qualifying employment where required and avoid assuming that a past draw predicts the next invitation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to live in Alberta for every AAIP stream?
No. Requirements differ by stream, but many worker streams are closely tied to Alberta employment or a provincial job offer.
Does an AAIP nomination give permanent residence automatically?
No. A nomination supports a separate permanent residence application to IRCC, which makes the final federal decision.
What is a Worker Expression of Interest?
It is the AAIP pre-application pool used for worker-stream selection. Candidates submit information, receive a score and may later be invited to apply.
