The Parents and Grandparents Program allows eligible sponsors to sponsor their own parents and grandparents for permanent residence when IRCC opens or conducts intake. The program uses specific sponsor eligibility and income rules.

At a glance

  • Invitation-based intake when the program is accepting applications
  • Sponsor residence, status and income requirements
  • Family size and co-signer considerations
  • Super Visa as a separate temporary residence option

Current status

IRCC has paused new Parents and Grandparents Program intake. Existing applications continue to be processed, but new interest-to-sponsor forms and new invitations are not currently being accepted.

Sponsor eligibility

Sponsors must meet requirements including age, Canadian status, residence in Canada and the applicable financial requirements. Income is assessed according to IRCC’s rules for the relevant taxation years.

Who can be sponsored

The program is for the sponsor’s own biological or adopted parents and grandparents, with eligible dependants included according to the rules. Invitations are not transferable to another person.

Alternative for visits

Parents and grandparents who are not currently able to pursue sponsorship may wish to review the Super Visa program if their objective is an extended temporary visit.
