Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Skilled construction workers wearing hard hats and safety vests

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is an Express Entry pathway for skilled workers who are qualified in an eligible skilled trade. The program has different work-experience and language requirements from the Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Worker Program.

At a glance

  • Eligible skilled-trade work experience
  • Job offer or Canadian certificate of qualification requirement
  • Trade-specific language thresholds
  • Settlement funds where required

Trade experience

Applicants must establish qualifying paid skilled-trade experience in an eligible NOC group and demonstrate that their work corresponds to the occupational requirements.

Job offer or certificate

A qualifying full-time job offer for the required period or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the skilled trade is generally central to eligibility.

Education and language

The program does not impose a minimum education requirement, although education can improve Express Entry ranking. The language thresholds differ by language ability.

Provincial trade regulation

Trades are often regulated provincially or territorially. Certificate-of-qualification processes and employer requirements can therefore interact with the immigration strategy.
